Received my PH in 1967 while serving as a platoon corpsman with 3rd Platoon, Delta Company, 1st Recon Bn, 1st MarDiv based at ChuLai on the beach. Congrats on putting together a fantastic website. This can be as healing as the Vietnam War Memorial/Wall. This May, we will have the traveling wall here on the Oregon coast in Newport for the Loyalty Days celebration. We will also have a 1000 flags set up and be presenting the Oregon Veterans Medal to all deserving vets who present with their DD214s. We been doing the medal presentation now for several years and it is a much sought after medal by all the vets in Oregon. Other states are following our lead now. To my brothers in arms, Welcome Home.

I always considered the Purple Heart Award equal to the Medal of Honor. I have known many great wounded warriors from WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm and most recently Afghanistan and Iraq that have earned the Purple Heart Medal for their combat wounds, and a number of them were KIA. I myself never received one because I was lucky but I sure have seen some of my old buddies get wacked up close. When you see it and you smell it all you can think of is the old Vietnam Song sung by EDWIN STARR entitled War. "What is it good for? Absolutely nothing."

As for myself I spent a short time in Vietnam back in 1965 with 3rd Marine Division. In addition, I spent a total of 12 years in the USMCR and one year in the USAFR and 13 years in the NYARNG and 8 years inactive with the NYARNG for a total of 34 years of military service. After saying all of that, I commend Dana and all the others for creating this Purple Heart website. I intend to send this website link to a number of veterans that I have on my email list. In closing, if you can read thank a teacher if you can speak English thank a veteran.
